The three-year Economics and Business Economics Bachelor's degree is entirely in English. You will learn how business experts and policymakers attempt to stimulate both corporate and economic activity. The programme will give you the theoretical tools and analytical skills needed to address complex issues.

During the first year - the foundation year - all students take the same course units. In year two, you will either specialise in Business Economics, Economics or International Economics and Business.

* Business Economics focuses on decision-making within an organisation from an economic point of view.
* In Economics, you learn to develop models with which to obtain an understanding of economic phenomena.
* International Economics and Business focuses on the economics of globalisation and its impact on firms’ strategies and government policies.

After finishing the Bachelor's degree, you can continue as a master student at the University of Groningen.

profielen

profiel Business Economics

What is the best way to run an organization? In the profile Business Economics, you learn to understand decision-making within an organization from an economic point of view.

The Business Economics profile offers a high-quality practical and theoretical academic foundation for any profession within the field. The focus is on core subjects from Business Economics: finance, accounting, marketing, operations and logistics and human resource management. In addition, you will get a firm base in general economic theory. Via this combination of Business and Economics courses you learn to view the functioning of organizations from an analytic, microeconomic as well as a macro- and international economic point of view. You also receive ample training in mathematics, statistics, applied econometrics, and research skills in order to be able to do individual academic research in Business Economics. In addition, you develop your academic writing skills through writing several theoretical and empirical papers and, finally, the Bachelor's thesis.

profiel Economics

Are you interested in economic and social problems? Then the Economics profile may be the perfect choice for you.

Economists develop models to obtain an understanding of economic phenomena. They look at economic data, try to make sense of it and explain its implications. It could be said that economics is a way of looking at the world. As such, the number of applications is almost limitless. Therefore, in this profle, a wide range of topics is addressed, like banking, fiscal and monetary policy issues, the origins of economic growth, decisions made by consumers on markets, and strategic behaviour and competition between firms on markets. The Economics profile offers a high-quality practical and theoretical foundation for any profession in this field. The focus on both theory and practice prepares you for professional life. You will learn about general economic theory and take core courses in both Macroeconomics and Microeconomics. A crucial part of the curriculum is learning to apply theory in practical situations. When you are writing your Bachelor's thesis, you will use this skill.

profiel International Economics and Business (IE&B)

Are you interested in problems of globalization and development? In this profile, you will learn how to analyse these problems from an economic point of view.

The world has become more and more integrated by increasing international trade and international capital flows. Strategies of firms and governments have to be adjusted to changing international circumstances. The International Economics and Business profile gives you the tools to understand and possibly influence the behaviour of international companies, intergovernmental organizations and non-governmental agencies in a global business environment. The IE&B profile offers solid academic training as an economist with a strong international orientation. The core of the profile consists of courses in both International Economics and International Business. International Economics deals with international trade, the internationalization choices of firms and the consequences for e.g. labour markets, but also with the determinants of international capital flows and exchange rates. International Business concentrates on the main characteristics and activities of international corporations and how strategic decision-making of multinational enterprises is affected by national economic, social, political and cultural environments.

You will be offered study advice after first year of study. You can expect a positive result if you have earned more than 45 ECTS credit points (out of a total of 60 ECTS). If you have earned fewer than 45 ECTS and are issued a negative result, you will not be allowed to continue with your degree programme.
You will receive preliminary study advice in December to make sure that you know where you stand. Please contact your study advisor as soon as possible if you have any questions about the BSA system.
N.B. Some degree programmes use a tutoring system; please check with your study advisor.

study guidance
As a student, you are expected to work independently, but of course, the faculty will help you do so. Together with other first-years, you will participate in a mentor group. The mentor, a senior student, will help you learn the ins and outs of the faculty. In addition, you will discuss your study progress with your tutor (a lecturer-supervisor) at regular intervals. The study advisers are available to help you with specific study problems.
During the first year, your mentor group, called Study Performance and Academic Attitudes (SPAA) group, will meet on a regular basis, supervised by your student-mentor. Assignments and discussions will help you gain insight into your own way of studying and how to develop effective study skills. You will follow most tutorials with the same group. This small-scale approach enhances contact between students and between students and lecturers. You will also have a lecturer-tutor, whom you will meet individually at the start of your studies and after the first two exam periods. This way you receive personal and regular feedback on your study progress. Successful studying depends on many different factors, so it is understandable that you may need to consult an impartial expert with whom you can discuss your study progress and personal circumstances.. The faculty's study advisors are available to help you. Obviously, everything discussed with the study advisor remains confidential.

Stanislava Todorova, Bulgaria
Groningen is just perfect for a Bachelor's student

I decided to come to the Netherlands because I thought it would be somewhat more challenging and interesting than the usual destinations Bulgarian students choose to acquire a degree. The idea of studying in such an international environment, where I can meet students from all over the world really appealed to me.

Here I am given the chance to set my own agenda. I have control over my study process, and what I achieve is determined solely by me. Studying in Groningen is not easy and you have to work hard...
It is a wonderful town for students because there is so much to do outside the university as well. I am happy that I have chosen Groningen, it is just perfect for a Bachelor's student!

"A challenging and diverse job"

'After graduating I began an internship at NIBC, a Dutch merchant bank. Soon I could join the NIBC Infrastructure & Renewables team. We finance projects ranging from road and prison building to telecom infrastructure. We were one of the banks that financed the A15, a motorway connecting Maasvlakte 2 to Rotterdam. In my Master I specialised in corporate finance and quantitative skills. During my studies I was taught many aspects of the business environment. This was very useful in my work.'

A Master's degree in Finance offers career opportunities in corporate finance, corporate governance, financial markets and portfolio management, with job opportunities at multinationals such as PwC, Google, Coca-Cola, or Toyota.

A Master's degree in Economics grants you access to the world of banking or the government sector, where you could help develop social programmes. A Master's degree in International Economics and Business opens the gateway to multinationals, intergovernmental institutions or international organizations. All of these degrees could help you become an analyst for a research institute, consulting firm or university.

If you choose the Research Master's degree programme you could move into academia and perhaps decide to go further and earn a PhD at a university in the Netherlands or abroad.

Because all our programmes are EQUIS and AACSB accredited, a standard which only one percent of universities reach worldwide, your degree will be highly valued on the labour market.
