Are you interested in international politics, law and justice? Are you curious to see how international relations influence international law? Then this programme is perfect for you!

The bachelor's programme in International and European Law takes three years. The first year teaches just about all basic law fields and is therefore broad in character, with concepts of private law, constitutional law, and criminal law discussed. In the second year, European Union law and public international law will be discussed to be a much larger extent, as well as research methods and training. The third year ends your bachelor programme by writing a thesis on a subject of your choice in law, which will be defended in front of supervisors and fellow students. This third year also requires students to study one semester at a university abroad. There is an interdisciplinary component in each year of this program.

More detailed information about the programme can be found here.

Applications should be made through the ''Admission and application'' tab on this page.

Waarom aan de Rijksuniversiteit?

The focus on European law and public international law is far greater than the focus on national legal contexts. No national law system is being taught as a general rule.

There is a clear interdisciplinary component in the programme, which is represented by an interdisciplinary component in each semester.

This programme is unique in Europe with regard to the content of the programme. It also holds a compulsory semester of law courses abroad.

On top of providing the Admissions Board with transcripts and diplomas, students should have an equivalent minimum GPA (Grade Point Average) of 7/10 (Dutch grading scale). For applicants with a non-EU/EEA qualification, this minimum GPA is mandatory. Grade Point Average is the average of all the marks of your pre-university education. To note, a score of 6 is a passing grade in the Netherlands.

Applicants whose native language is not English must provide adequate evidence of proficiency in English. The following tests are accepted:

  • (international) internet TOEFL (to be sent in through our institutional code 7191): score of at least 92, all sections sufficient (so at least 21 on each section);
  • (academic) IELTS Academic (British Council's English Language Test): score of at least 6.5, all sections sufficient (so at least 6.0 on each section);
  • CPE, Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English;
  • CAE, Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English.

Applicants that have an IB or EB diploma, or IGCSE can, upon their request, be exempt from taking one of the English proficiency tests mentioned above under certain conditions. You can check for these specific conditions.
All students should always apply for such exemptions though. It is the Admissions Board that decides on these matters.

reference letter
Applicants must provide one reference from a lecturer from his/her pre-university education who has detailed knowledge of their academic records. Instructions for reference letters can be found at:

Applicants must send a letter in which they motivate why they want to participate in the LLB programme (max. 650 words). The letter should be written by the applicants themselves; it is not allowed to submit an (official) translation.

Nexus is the study association for the LLB programme in International and European Law and related master programmes.
These programmes mainly consist of international students and, therefore, Nexus is very internationally orientated. Besides organizing activities to integrate internationals into Dutch culture, such as a political debate with local parties in English, Nexus also aims to provide members with the chance to obtain a social network, participate in the organization of guest lectures or informal activities, attend debating trainings, trips and workshops, all in a multicultural environment.

Christian Garrard, UK, LLB student International and European Law
Coming to the Netherlands over three years ago was without doubt the best decision I have ever made.

I never intended on studying 'English' law and just becoming a lawyer in the UK but rather to specialise in international and/or European law straight away. This was not possible in the UK (at the time) with all European or international law being offered at masters level only. I came across the LLB programme for international and European law in Groningen and immediately realised it was exactly what I wanted to do.

Add on to this that Groningen is all you can ask for in a student city with plenty of opportunities, a vibrant nightlife and a great atmosphere, then you have the perfect combination. Coming to the Netherlands over three years ago was without doubt the best decision I have ever made. The law faculty offers a tremendous amount of support for new students and this continues over the course of the degree. The areas covered in the LLB programme vary greatly and gave me a good opportunity to decide what area of law I would want to specialise in on completion of my bachelor degree. Despite not focusing on any national law the legal understanding developed as part of the programme, especially in public international and EU law will be indispensable in any legal career. Asides from the high standard of education, what makes the experience of the LLB in Groningen so rewarding is the people I have shared that experience with, like minded students from so many different backgrounds make an excellent network of people that I will keep in contact with for the rest of my life. The city of Groningen, although small, is an excellent place to live as a student and especially an international student as there are already so many other international students in Groningen helping give it the great atmosphere it has. It is truly an overlooked gem in this part of Europe. You may even find yourself doing a masters in Groningen because you can't bring yourself to leave!
