The Bachelor Programme in Psychology at the University of Groningen is a versatile, scientific degree programme that has the following specializations:

Psychology pervades all forms of human activity and psychologists deal with human behaviour and development in many fields, including psychological treatment, education, work place, sports, environment, traffic, health, media, and more. In clinical professions, for example, they are concerned with the treatment of people with emotional or behavioural disorders or are supporting patients with neurological deficits. Developmental issues are central to clinical work as well, since origins of maladaptive behaviour often lie in early childhood.

In the bachelor program, you learn about theories of the biological, cognitive, and social factors influencing behaviour. In addition, you obtain basic conversational and diagnostic skills necessary for work in practice. Finally, you are trained to get an in-depth focus on the statistical knowledge and skills essential to scientific research, and you learn to reflect on scientific theory in psychology. In the third year of the Bachelor, you have the possibility to specialise in a domain of your own interest and that fits best with the track in your future Master.

1e jaar The first year courses will introduce you to the foundations of psychology:
  • biological psychology,
  • developmental psychology,
  • personality psychology
  • social psychology
  • statistics

The teaching of skills takes place in small groups under the guidance of a teacher/mentor and focuses on:
  • acquiring basic academic skills (reading, presenting, writing, study skills)
  • applying statistical knowledge and research methods
  • learning professional methods of interviewing
2e jaar The classes are subdivided in the spheres of action of a psychologist:
  • industrial and organizational psychology
  • brain and behaviour
  • clinical psychology
  • social psychology and its applications

Statistics, test theory, and research methodology are taught and in a practical form. You will be taught in small groups how to set up, describe and present a simple research project. Administering tests and the handling of diagnostics are highlighted during the practicals on professional skills.
3e jaar You can focus on one of the specializations mentioned earlier, but there are also many other courses within the field of psychology or from a different context, even at foreign universities. Important in this year is the bachelor thesis: an academic report about your own research project supervised by a staff member. During the writing of the thesis you can combine the knowledge that you have gained during your studies with statistical, diagnostic and methodological skills.

  • Studying with a disability

They assist with:
  • Long-term planning
  • Study progress meetings
  • Changing to a different degree programme/university
  • Requesting a degree certificate

Adequate referral of students to internal/external bodies, such as:
  • Exam Committee

Mentor groups
Students belong to the same group during the entire first year. They are supported by mentors who are in close contact with the academic advisors.

In addition, students learn during the first year course 'Writing and Presenting' how to study in an academic environment. Some of the things they learn are: how to prepare a study planning, to practise the making of summaries and mind-maps, and the use of other tools that can help to make studying easier.

basiskennis
Although formally speaking we do not distinguish between different VWO profiles, we strongly advise a firm background in English, mathematics and biology. In the bachelor, there is a strong emphasis on scientific research. On the basis of courses in statistics and methodology, you learn how to perform good and ethical research and to evaluate the reliability of your results. Many students experience difficulties with statistics, so it is important to realize in advance that this is part of your studies.

"To anyone who is thinking about studying overseas: just do it. It's a big, scary risk but it is so worth it.... Groningen is probably the smallest place I've ever lived in, but it's got everything."

After I finished high school in South Africa I wanted to return to Europe. I'm half South-African and half English, and grew up in both countries. I looked around to see where I could study in English and found the psychology Bachelor's programme in Groningen.

Psychology seemed like a good basis for all sorts of things, and I knew that even if I didn’t end up working in the field of psychology, it would be a good background for something else. Now I’m in the final year of the Bachelor’s programme.
Groningen is probably the smallest place I’ve ever lived in, but it’s got everything...
It really is a big little city, every night of the week there is something going on. And it’s great that you can get around so easily, by bike or on foot.
In the programme you learn how to think critically, how to decipher scientific articles and how to disseminate scientific information. The way I think about things and the way I take in news has changed as a result.
One thing I’m really impressed with here is the level of English. I have lecturers who are able to teach me really complex things and I understand them perfectly even though they are from all over the world.
After I finish I’m going to take some time off and think about what I want to do, also because I want to pursue more creative, theatrical things. But I think psychology will be useful for everything I do. You learn how people think, how to interact with them, why people act the way they do, and you learn to interpret their behaviour. All that has been valuable.
To anyone who is thinking about studying overseas: just do it. It’s a big, scary risk but it is so worth it. There are many international students, so you’re just going to meet people and experience a whole new way of life which is very exciting. One tip: Facebook is invaluable: from bicycles to housing, from clothes to furniture, for everything, really.

When I found out I could study Psychology in English abroad, I decided to give everything up and start over again.

My name is Marco Burelli, I'm 29 years old and I'm originally from Udine, a small city in the north of Italy. I'm in the second year of the Bachelor's degree programme in Psychology. Before I started my Bachelor's I worked for a couple of years in Italy. After a while I realized I didn't want to do that job for the rest of my life. When I found out I could study Psychology in English abroad, I decided to give everything up and start over again.

My first impression of Groningen was very good. It is exactly the right size for a city and there are so many students...
I expected it to be well organized, because of the stereotypes about The Netherlands. But I was still really surprised by how clearly all the information is provided through the website. You always know what you have to do today, tomorrow, next week or even in six months. That's a huge difference with how things are organized at universities in Italy.
The students on my degree programme are very open and friendly, and particularly in the international track everyone is very willing to meet new people. Although there are many students in the Bachelor's in Psychology, you also have small classes. There were only 12 of us in my academic skills class last year and I made a lot of friends.
At first I thought I wanted to be a workplace psychologist, but now I don't know anymore because all the course units are so interesting. I might want to work for an NGO, but I'm not sure yet.
I'm extremely happy that I decided to come here. The quality of the University is so high that I am confident that whatever specialization I choose I'll be satisfied and that I'll find a job that makes me happy.

The study is quite broad

I come from the UK and I wanted to experience a different culture. Hence I thought The Netherlands might be a nice opportunity seeing, as the culture is, although different, still quite similar to my home culture.I decided to study the English Bachelor of Psychology because at the time Groningen was the only university that offered Psychology in English

The study is quite broad and in the 3rd year you have the opportunity to choose modules.
Because of the large amount of students the main method of assessment are Multiple Choice exams...
Clinical psychology does not offer a compulsory internship.
I am planning to go back to the UK to do a master in Forensic Psychology. After finishing that I would like to work in a court or in a prison as a forensic psychologist, working with criminals and their possible mental disorders.
My parents finance my studies and I have a job, in order to get a bit of money on the side. Besides studying I am a member of the faculty council for the faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences. I was a board member at the VIP, Study Association of Psychology, for a year and I currently am a Student Assistant for Communication and Diagnostic Skills.
Future students I would tell that studying Psychology in Groningen is completely different to other continental or UK universities. Some students can cope with that easily, others can't

The third year of the psychology program gives you a lot of freedom. You have the opportunity to follow your interests and choose subjects that really stimulate you.

As I am not from the Netherlands, I was already living 'abroad' in Groningen. Thus, after an endless back and forth, I chose not go abroad to study at an attractive location such as Sao Paulo or Hong Kong. I wanted to make most of my studies here in Groningen.

I was interested in modeling society as a complex adaptive system and the relation between individual behavior and societal phenomena. Within my regular program I enrolled in mostly social psychology courses and courses on individual decision making...
On top of this decision latitude in the regular program it was possible to design your own minor called, 'free choice minor'. Following my interest I took courses on social networks in Sociology, a course on modeling primate behavior in Theoretical Biology, and surprising myself – a calculus course for Computer Scientists. The many opportunities to choose allowed me to specialize, follow an intrinsic interest, and distinguish myself from fellow students. It was also a lot of fun to meet students from different faculties, discovering how our styles of thinking and what we have been taught differ. I will use all this knowledge I have accumulated for my bachelor thesis and for a research internship in an attempt to learn about how we individuals affect society.

Automaticity and addiction

My research focuses on mental habits (automatic processes) and addiction. Automatic attentional and behavioral responses are necessary to guide behavior towards natural rewards (good food, attractive mates). However, they may become strongly linked to cues of addiction and thus contribute to use that occurs despite a conscious desire to restrain.

My work examines the role of these automatic appetitive processes in failures to control addictive behavior. I also examine how mindfulness training may help to overcome such mental habits, thereby increasing self-control.

Interaction between individual, group and society

Man is by nature a remarkably social and co-operative entity. People not only feel comfortable in groups and social networks, together they construct whole societies. Such group processes create huge benefits for each individual. In spite of this, we increasingly see ourselves as unique and autonomous. Such interaction between individual, group and society is central to my research.
Laurent Krook
Lecturer in Research Methods, Academic Skills and Bachelor's thesis supervisor

I work at the Teaching Unit of the Psychology department. This means that I teach a selection of basic course units for the Bachelor's programme in psychology, both in English and Dutch.

I teach four course units in three days, namely: research methods, Bachelor’s theses, research practice and mentor groups. I spend the other two days doing my own thing, unconnected with the Bachelor’s programme in psychology...
My original plan was to pursue a PhD; I applied but nothing came of it. I then applied for a teaching position here and soon realized that I actually prefer teaching to conducting research.
The thing I like about the course units I teach is that the department has a sort of omnipresence: every student must follow our course units. I teach students the basics of academic learning, academic writing skills, giving academic presentations or carrying out empirical research. This lays the foundations for an academic future, so that students can decide for themselves where their interests lie in the more specialized departments.
Psychology ties in nicely with the concept of the Teaching Unit; you put it to good use anywhere. It’s a very broad concept, so it’s not only useful in psychology itself, but also in lots of smaller fields. Learning from each other about all the different disciplines and understanding the links between them is great fun. I think that for many people, a Bachelor’s degree in psychology together with a Master’s degree in a subject related to psychology forms a solid basis for a career. Psychology covers so much ground, whatever your specialization and whatever you plan to do.
Prospective students can expect an international learning environment, as we teach the Bachelor’s programme in psychology in both English and Dutch. Students are given a lot of freedom; they can compile their own package of course units, and new initiatives and ideas are welcomed. Finally, they can look forward to living in a great, young, lively city.

Beroepsperspectief / arbeidsmarkt

Psychology is a multi-facetted discipline, with many different sub-disciplines. Accordingly, there are many different types of psychologists, such as for example industrial psychologists, neuropsychologists, experimental psychologists, sportpsychologists, social psychologists, developmental psychologists, or clinical psychologists.
Their career paths (usually after finishing a master's degree in Psychology) are even more diverse. Many psychologists fulfil advisory functions or are involved in some form of diagnostics and counselling. Many of them actually work in an interdisciplinary context, for example with social scientists from other disciplines (e.g., as a policy advisor). They distinguish themselves through detailed knowledge of the laws of human behaviour in combination with an analytical and methodological approach to problem solving.

For students who are mainly interested in working with clinical patients, it is important to realize that a bachelor's and/or master's degree in Psychology do NOT qualify students as psychological therapists. Rather, a master's of science in psychology diploma is a prerequisite for further qualification in this area (post-master education).
