You will also learn how to conduct independent scientific research. Students are also attending courses Fifteen centuries of the Netherlands and Methods of Linguistic, Literary and Historical Research. All the courses in the second year are obligatory.
3e jaar During the third year you have a lot of freedom to tailor your studies to your personal interests and ambitions via electives. You choose to specialise in one of four areas: Dutch Literature, Linguistics, History or Art History. As a Dutch Studies student, you can expect a full working week of about 40 hours. You will spend an average of 14 hours in-class, for example lectures or tutorials, and the rest of the time in independent study. Liran Spigiel
First year student Dutch Studies

I really enjoy the programme. I understand more and more. Sometimes I realise that I say things that I couldn't do a few weeks before. The steps I make surprise me every time. The Dutch culture is also very surprising and different from mine, so I had to get used to it. For example: there are a lot of birthday parties! Every weekend I have another party. That's nice and I really feel like I get to know the culture better as well when I meet native Dutch people.
Rick Honings
Programme chair BA Dutch Studies

Dutch Studies is a multidisciplinary programme. This means that, as well as taking language acquisition classes, you will follow specialist courses in linguistics, literature, history and politics, and art history. Outside of the classroom you will visit some of the Netherlands' world-famous galleries, museums and historical locations. The opportunity for an internship at an organisation will provide you with additional professional skills and experience.
