minor Minors at Leiden University
As a bachelor's student at Leiden University you can chose from a wide range of different areas for your optional subjects. You can use this opportunity to broaden or deepen your programme.
A minor is one of the ways you can personalise your programme.
A minor is a related, logical package of subjects. The minor element in your programme has to be logical in terms of structure and cohesion, with introductory subjects, followed by a summary of the main themes in the field, so that students who are less familiar with the field are able to follow the courses. In Leiden minors carry 30 study credits, but it is also possible to study for half this number of credits.
minor Minor Intelligence Studies
In the minor Intelligence Studies attention is being paid to the structure, working methods and the qualitative and quantitative analysis techniques used by intelligence and security agencies.
Furthermore, the programme offers the choice to a specific focus on cyber intelligence, the services of the superpowers during the Cold War, quantitative analysis techniques used in intelligence, intelligence failures, and the position and powers od intelligence services in the democratic legal order.
The minor offers classes from guest lecturers, who either worked or still work in the field of intelligence. Their expertise as (former) employees of the Dutch secret services, scientific researchers, business experts or as other intelligence professionals provides students with a lot of practice examples.
minor Minor Security, Safety and Justice
The minor Security, Safety and Justice will provide you with the basic academic knowledge to understand the background of these questions better, with an emphasis on the “security” element.
The minor SSJ enables you to broaden your horizon regarding current topics in society.
The knowledge basis is multidisciplinary, and centers around three broad academic themes:
These themes are chosen because they are connected to specific academic fields. Security is related to criminology, antiterrorism, and security management; safety is directly related to the technical and sociological aspects of security management; and justice relates to legal studies. Knowledge of all of these fields is necessary to understand security and safety issues. In that way, the minor SSK is multidisciplinary, combining technical and non-technical topics.
minor Minor Global Affairs
The minor Global Affairs aims to provide students with the tools and knowledge to understand the most important global trends and challenges.
In the minor students will explore the relationship between geo-political shifts and power instruments in International Relations: in the political/ military as well as in the financial/economic domain. We will address the current situation in international diplomacy and the solutions it could or should provide in this radically changed environment which continues to change rapidly.

honours-/excellence program Honours College Tackling Global Challenges
This honours programme Tackling Global Challenges offers a three year, 30 EC package. A combination of didactical principles is used to reach the aims of the programme.
Current challenges require new thinkers, potential leading experts and public leaders to solve crises at global and local level. The Honours Track has the goal of educating students on how current problems play out among government, science and society and give them the skills to tackle some of these issues theoretically, based on academic literature, and practically, at a local level. The learning experience is thereby based on interactive activities, such as visits to the Dutch parliament, the European Parliament, (public) organizations in The Hague as well as scenario planning and a simulation game.
Students are asked to go beyond the boundaries of their own field of study, look at themes, issues and trends in society that require a combination of scientific disciplines and analytical lenses. The programme links analysis or existing patterns to a future outlook. While using their own field of study to understand old and new issues, students are also expected to understand and integrate the contributions from other disciplines. Students are further involved in shaping the programme, in suggesting and preparing topics of analysis and discussion.
